Volunteer Management Development (Paid Freelance Role)

We are looking for someone to help us with Volunteer Management Development. This is a short-term, freelance role perfect for someone passionate about community engagement and knowledgeable in volunteer coordination.

Some background

The bookshop is a not-for-profit, community business, owned and run by our members. Our mission is to run a community bookshop to benefit all members of the local community. We have a part-time employed shopkeeper and the rest of our work is resourced by volunteers. Volunteer Management has until now been ad-hoc in terms of systems and organisation. 

We have recently secured some funding via the National Lottery’s Awards for All fund, to resource the establishment of volunteer coordination systems to assist the development of the bookshop. 

Though for an initial 10 months period, with additional funding the role may be extended or transition into that of a volunteer coordinator. 

Purpose of the role

Though staffing the shop is an important volunteering role, we could offer opportunities for volunteers to help in many more aspects of running the bookshop such as marketing and promotion, cataloguing, bookkeeping, being a committee member and planning shop improvements. 

Our aim with the work is to build the infrastructure necessary to expand volunteer opportunities and in doing so expand our community impact and financial sustainability. 

We need a Volunteer Management Development Role to develop the organisational systems and functions necessary to support greater volunteer involvement in the organisation. 

Outline of tasks and activities 

  • Working with the Committee and existing volunteers to develop new volunteer roles.
  • Assisting with recruitment and advertising for volunteers
    Overseeing volunteer policy development to ensure we comply with volunteering best practice.
  • Creating a shared knowledge base for volunteering
  • Creating systems for inducting, developing and training volunteers.
  • Recommending or Setting up systems to enable us to manage volunteers (eg a spreadsheet or database)
  • Provide guidance on retention strategies and volunteer recognition.
  • Arranging regular volunteer socials to keep people in touch with each other.
