Michael taught both academic and studio-based students for many years at Manchester School of Art and he has published widely on British and European art of the modern period; including books on Goya, Monet, Cézanne and a study of his wife's work – Ghislaine Howard: the Human Touch. His book, L. S. Lowry: A Visionary Artist, remains the benchmark for any serious consideration of the artist.
